Pay attention to your older dog’s needs

June 16, 2011 by Jennifer Simms Leave a Comment

Although it may be one of the harder truths to accept, dog owners all know that their beloved pet will eventually cease to be the young spirited pup he or she once was and become an older dog just trying to enjoy its golden years. While it may be difficult to see your dog slip into old age, there are a number ways you can make the process easier for them and by doing so, it may make things easier for you as well.

One of the easiest changes to make that can greatly improve the life of your elderly canine is to switch up their diet. While young dogs will certainly need a diet that is high in protein and calories due to their increased activity, older dogs will be less likely to get up and run around as they were in their younger days. To prevent your older dog from gaining weight, try introducing them to a reduced calorie and reduced fat diet. You may also want to focus on providing them with higher-quality protein as their nutritional needs are somewhat different.

Whole Earth Farms Senior Dog Dry Food is a great pick for owners of old dogs as it gives them everything they need as they enter old age. They key to this product is that includes a lean protein source as well as plenty of blueberries and cranberries, which contain antioxidants that will help reduce your dog’s chances of getting cancer.

Though diet is an important part of elderly pets’ lives, it is certainly not the only thing you should take into consideration. Older dogs will more than likely find it difficult to get around whether due to arthritis or age-related joint pain. There a number of ways you can make it easier for them to get from place to place, from ramps and steps to a comfortable bed.

In addition to making it easier for your dog to get around, there are several medications out there designed specifically to ease joint pain and help your elderly dog become as active as they once were.

Adequan Canine is an effective treatment for arthritis pain that works by inhibiting enzymes from building up and degenerating cartilage and causing pain. It also reduces joint inflammation and increases joint fluid.

By focusing on a few simple things that are plaguing your older dog, their golden years can be just as good as their youth.
