Tips for a safe summer with your dog

June 17, 2011 by Jennifer Simms Leave a Comment

As the perception of owning pets continues to evolve, many individuals with dogs are looking for better ways to keep their four-legged friends happy and healthy. This can be especially difficult with dogs during the summer months as they tend to get out and explore the nice weather, which can lead to a host of dangerous situations. However, there are plenty of steps dog owners can take to ensure that their pets say safe during the impending summer.

Pet expert Wendy Diamond recently spoke with Journal and Topics Newspapers about what to focus on when caring for dogs in the coming months. One of the most common mistakes made by pet owners with a green thumb is that they plant things that might be toxic to dogs. Plants such as buckwheat, hydrangea, some ferns and a variety of lilies can harm dogs, so owners may want to take precautions when working in the garden.

Another thing to consider during the summer months and throughout the year iis what type of treats you feed your pet Diamond told the news source that the best products are ones that contain no artificial flavors, colors or fillers. Max’s Fresh Baked Gourmet Dog Treats are an excellent choice that fit the bill. This delicious snack is made with human-grade ingredients and does not include any preservatives that could be harmful to dogs.

With the nice weather likely to continue, you would certainly be remiss if you and your dog didn’t get out and exercise together. Not only will this keep the both of you healthy, but it also gives you a great opportunity to bond with your pet.

“Walking and running with pups has always been popular, but the latest dog exercise trend is to spend time at specialized dog parks, which are available in many communities,” Diamond wrote for the publication.

Of course, getting out and exercising can be tough for older dogs suffering arthritis and joint pain, but there are plenty medications out there to help them get back that youthful bounce in their step. Rimadyl is an effective, chewable medication that works to reduce inflammation caused by everything form arthritis to hip displaysia and is well-received by dogs.
