Learn how to apply flea and tick medication correctly

June 11, 2012 by Jennifer Simms

What-a-dog-wants_16000425_800861793_0_0_7024038_300Fleas and ticks are nothing to joke about, as these parasites can cause serious harm to your dog’s overall health. There are steps you can take to ensure no unwanted critters make your dog’s coat and skin their home. Applying their pet drugs the correct way is arguably one of the most important.

Forms of medication

Flea and tick preventatives can come in a liquid or chewable tab form so the way you give your dog the medication will vary depending on which brand you use. Revolution, Frontline Plus and Pet Armor are all topical medications and need some instruction to work correctly. Comfortis comes in a chewable tablet, so you can simply give the dog the medication as a treat.

How to apply

For liquid forms of medication, there are certain steps to take to ensure the product gets absorbed into your pet’s skin. To begin, make sure to touch the skin, not the fur, with applicator tip. It’s best to apply it on the back of the dog’s neck where it can’t lick it. Slide the applicator under the hair, instead of parting in with your fingers, then make sure it touches the skin before squeezing the liquid out. You can apply it on different sections of its neck, but it’s best to concentrate on one area to make sure the most medication gets applied directly on its skin. Refrain from rubbing the tick and flea medication in, as this can just spread it on its fur, where it won’t protect against the parasites. Make sure to squeeze the tube until it’s empty and then offer your pooch Greenies Dental Treats for Dogs for a job well done.

When to apply

Ticks and fleas are present all year long, so it’s important to stick with a strict regimen of applying the medication on your dog’s skin. If you start it on the pet drugs on May 30, you should apply it again exactly one month later to ensure your dog is always protected. Part of making sure it’s protected is through ensuring its skin is soft and healthy. The medication will not work as well on dogs with dry, thick or rough skin as it makes it hard for the medicine to be absorbed. Giving your dog pet products like Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet will help get its skin, coat and organs healthy.
