Plan a fun vacation for Fido this holiday season

November 13, 2012 by Jennifer Simms

Half-of-all-pet-owners-are-planning-to-travel-with-their-animals-this-year--according-to-the-Seattle-Times-_16000425_800905288_0_0_7038771_300-3Half of all pet owners are planning to travel with their animals this year, according to the Seattle Times. As most pet owners know, traveling with a dog this holiday season will be fun, but will also be like traveling with children: Dogs need a way to let out some energy. Stopping at rest areas on the way will help, but dog owners should think outside of the pet care box to make the most of the trip for their four-legged friend.

A new favorite among dog lovers has become doggy “spaws.” In the Windy City, Pooch Chicago dog spa pampers dogs with doggy styling, one-on-one playtime and exercise, and even a turndown service that includes a tummy rub. Dogs can stay at the hotel for the day or overnight. Similar services exist across the United States from Monmouth County,New Jersey, to Los Angeles. Pet owners should try to find one in their area to let Fido have a little “me time” on his vacation.

Another fun activity for pet owners and their dogs is to experience new walking trails and make sure they get in all of their dog steps. Since not all parks are dog-friendly, it’s important that pet owners plan their recreational adventures ahead of time. Pet owners can check out where to bring their dog at sites such as Bringfido.com and Dogfriendly.com. BringFido provides dog owners with a list of the “Top 10 Dog-Friendly Trails in the World” and lets them search globally to see if trails have been reported for the city in which they are staying. It also offers suggestions for dog-friendly restaurants, lodging, air travel and attractions.

Owners can introduce their pets to culture by visiting pet-friendly museums. The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog in St. Louis prides itself in being a fine arts museum that allows dogs. The museum provides water and treats for dogs.

If dog owners want to get their pets off of dry land, there are several fun travel options that can be enjoyed by the whole family – including their dog. Seadog Cruises in Chicago allows dogs on the sightseeing cruise if the boat isn’t full. There are also several dog-friendly vacation spots on beaches that pet owners and their dog will appreciate after winter doldrum sets in. Dog-friendly rentals can be found in cities such as Lake Travis, Texas, and Lake Tahoe, California. Again, dog owners should check pet-friendly specific websites to find Fido’s dream vacation.
