Cats are mysterious creatures as sometimes kitty may want your attention, while other times she may prefer to be left alone. Catster Magazine recently offered owners some tips for understanding their cats better in order to help pet parents and their animals have a better relationship all around.
The experts at the publication report the best way to check how a cat is feeling is to look at her ears. Cat ears are made up of more than 24 muscles, allowing them to bend, twist and fold them in a variety of ways. The ears also help kitties communicate and hear better.
In most instances, a cat who is fully relaxed will have ears that are pointed slightly to the side and slightly forward. This position shows your cat is not fearful or on edge, but rather that she is content and at ease. Times like these are best for petting your kitty.
An alert cat is not necessarily a tense cat. In fact, this may be the time when she wants to play or use her natural hunting skills. If her ears are straight up and in a forward position, it typically means she is in an alert and interested mood and may want to play. This can be a great time to take out some of her favorite pet products, like a toy mouse or a laser pointer, in order to bond with her and help her get enough exercise.
Since cats are small in stature, it is easy for them to get scared or nervous after hearing certain noises or coming across new animals. You may notice your kitty is a bit stressed if her ears start twitching from side to side. If you see this happening for any reason, it may be a good idea to try and pet her or give her a gentle embrace to let her know she’s safe and that everything is all right.
Cats can sometimes get aggressive or agitated if you disrupt them from sleep or something else they are doing. You may want to stay away from your kitty if you notice her ears are moving from a forward position to a backward state, the news source reports. When a cat’s ears move from an upright position to a horizontal position, it typically means she is feeling a heightened sense of fear, agitation or submissiveness and she is putting them in such a position to let you know she wants to be left alone.
