Leaving your dog at home by himself may cause some anxiety because you don’t want him to be bored or chew up the new furniture. A healthy, happy dog needs ample time to run around and be active in order to burn excess energy and maintain a suitable weight and he won’t get this by sitting around all day. Proper pet care requires a little energy from owners, and plenty of pet products to keep him both physically and mentally stimulated.
Early morning stroll
According to Animal Behavior College’s curriculum, owners who take their dog for a long, brisk morning walk notice a significant decrease in the amount of destructive habits. Although every breed is different, one or two 20-minute walks will help curb bad behavior. Just like humans, increasing a dog’s exercise will make him healthier and less energetic while you’re away from the home. If you aren’t able to set aside enough time for a walk in the morning, try letting him roam around the yard to burn off some energy.
Leaving safe toys around the home for the pooch to play with while you’re away will help keep him occupied on a long afternoon. There are some toys that are meant to develop cognitive skills and keep puppies busy trying to get all the treats out. The hard rubber toys are safe because dog’s teeth can’t tear them apart easily, and you can put healthy snacks like peanut butter or a puppy concoction of frozen pet food inside.
Freezing toys with puppy treats inside can keep him busy for a while. Pets Adviser suggests mixing kibble and wet food together for a snack. You can also make ice cube treats with chicken broth and kibble mixed in, according to Three Lost Dogs. However, frozen treats can get messy so make sure that the dog isn’t in a room where he could leave his ice cubes near anything that could get water damage.
Rid the house of temptations
If you don’t want Fido to get into the bedroom when you’re not home, keep the doors closed and put away anything that he can chew up inside. Using a doggy gate could also work to keep the pup out of the living room or any other space that isn’t pet-friendly. Before leaving, clear table tops of food and put any shoes away as these can seem like tasty options when your dog is bored.
